The Eclipse

Did you catch the longest solar eclipse of the century?
Many in India, China and Japan saw the eclipse.

If you did not, it will happen again a century later in 2132.
Most of the students in 4 Humility feel they might not live that long to see the next solar eclipse. Only our grandchildren might live to see it.

An eclipse happens when the moon blocks the sun. We live in total darkness for a few minutes. To find out more about eclipses, this website has more information ?

Some people thought that the eclipse would bring bad luck while others were excited over it. Do you think eclipses bring bad luck?

Have you read 'Prisoners of the Sun'? It has a solar eclipse in the plot, and it played a real important part too! In this comic, the hero Tintin and his companions have been taken prisoners by a tribe of Incas. Their crime was to accidentally enter the Temple of the Sun God. Tintin, Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus are to be burned alive. Their pyre is to be lit by a magnifying glass focusing the rays of the sun. The only choice the Incas gave them was to allow them to choose the day and hour of their death.

Tintin finds a scrap of newspaper in his pocket. He notices a solar eclipse is predicted a few days hence and deliberately chooses that day and time for their execution. Just before the eclipse takes place, Tintin shouts to the leader of the Incas.

"The Sun God will not hear your prayers! O magnificent Sun, if it is thy will that we should live give us now a sign!"

And the sun as if to obey Tintin's will begins to disappear. The Incas leader is horrified and his people cower in fear. Terrified, the leader frees them and accords them places of honor.

Do you know of other stories that have an eclipse in it? Do share them with the rest of us.

I don't really think that they bring bad luck,I guess they are just legendary saying. The most sensible way to say it is that its just a change of the moon as it covers the sun fully and makes some parts of the world dark. And I think that this year there was no tsunami due to the short period but the longest between the past few years. These changes happen due to the creation of our solar system. This is all I have to say(The most scientific comment you have ever seen).
