Exercising Democracy

LRD: 5 Feb 2013

At the recent Punggol East by-election, Lee Li Lian from Workers’ Party (WP) won People’s Action Party’s (PAP) candidate, Dr Koh Poh Koon by nearly 11 percentage points. In Ms Lee’s campaign, she pointed out the following as the concerns of young families:
  • The rising cost of living
  • Work-life balance
  • The cost of child care
  • The stressful education system
Post your comments on the following questions:
1. Do you agree that the cost of living is rising? Quote examples (examples include: food at McDonalds is getting more expensive, bus fare is rising, increasing school fees).
2. Many have commented that the education system in Singapore is stressful. How do you, as a student, feel about it and why?

1. I agree that the cost of living is rising.Example:the price of cars and houses are rising.
2.I find it quite stressful especially in Primary 6 as there is a lot of homework. In the weekends, instead of enjoying my time with my family, I will be dong homework. Nearing the examinations, my teachers also give everybody a lot of homework that I have no time to revise for my examinations.

1) I agree that the cost of living is rising. (E.G :the price of houses, oil(?) and more are rising
2)I agree to the people. It would be more stressful for the P6s as its PSLE. The teachers would give us lots of homework.Sometimes, i dont have the time to even revise and rest! So, i think teachers should reduce the amount of work and plus SAVE THE EARTH! :) :)

1) I agree that the cost of living is rising. Example: the price of electricity and water.

2) I think the teachers giving us homework is alright but sometimes, they tend to give too many. Besides, our parents also give us homework which make us more stress, and have no time to revise.

2)I think that it is quite stressful especially in Primary 6 because sometimes teachers will give a lot of homework. However, I understand that teachers give us homework because it will help us to practice and revise our work. But, if they give too much homework,I will have to complete them and by the time I finish all of my homework,it is already quite late at night, and I will not be able to get enough sleep.during lessons the next day,I will not be able to concentrate well.

Yes, I agree.
The taxi fare is increasing, buying stationeries in bookstores are also getting more expensive.

I find it abit stressful but i think as a student, we need a little stress to motivate ourselves.

1) I agree that the cost of living is increasing eg. the price to rent a HDB flat is increasing.

2) Maybe sometimes the teachers give us a little too much homework and not to forget that some people have tuition or parents homework. But I guess it's okay as long as you can manage your time well.
