‘Truths’ with a Pinch of Salt (pg 12) - 5 Charity and 5 Joy

It was reported that some individuals intentionally spread rumours during the recent haze and caused unnecessary anxiety. This incident highlighted the fact that the information we receive or come across is not always reliable. Hence, it is important that we think carefully before accepting what we read or are told to be true, especially when the source of the information is unknown or dubious.

(1)  Why do you think people resort to spreading rumours?

(2) Choose one of the rumours cited by Minister Yaacob Ibrahim in the article and discuss how
the spread of such rumour could have affected Singapore as a nation.

1)I think that that people spread rumors because they want to get attention and they think that when people fall into their 'trap'then they would feel like they've succeeded.

2)One of the rumors were that someon gave a fake pollutant standard index reading.I think that that would cause the nation panic if the fake information was that the PSI was very high and if the fake reading told the nation that it was in the healthy range, the people would go out of their houses, not wearing their masks and if some of them have asthma ,they would suffocate and maybe die.

People resort to spreading rumors are mainly because they want to create chaos in the country. They also want to get attention and maybe they want to get profit. E.g. Somebody posted on social media that all the N95 masks are all sold out in all shops except for so and so shop. Then people will go to the shop to get one N95 masks before the shop have no more N95 mask.

1) They probably wanted to scare people and play pranks on them.
2)The rumours are about the haze. The people who spread the rumours might have caused people living in Singapore to panic and travel to another country and cause people to buy as many N95 masks as possible.

(1)I think people are spreading rumors because they like the feeling that people are actually saying the wrong infomation about others.Another reason why people spread rumors is because they want to take revenge on someone or play a trick on others.

(2)Dr Yaacobm Ibrahim said that there was a blogger of Ravi Philemon's friend posted that nine million N95 masks were brought into Singapore but it was not meant for the public.if I read happened to be an asthmatic person reading that I would have been very angry and would have blamed the government because people like me should have the previllage to have the masks.

1. I think that some people like seeing chaos in Singapore so that is why they resort to spreading rumours.
2.For Example, some people intentionally wrote in social media that the haze was coming back and it would affect those people who has asthma, which caused those people who has asthma to have unecessary anxiety.

1. People resort to spreading rumours because they want Singaporeans to panic. They find it fun to see chaos in Singapore.
2. The rumour that 9 million N95 mask brought into Singapore were not meant for the public. I think that they spread that rumour so that they can jack up the prices. Singaporeans might believe that rumour and then buy them at a higher price. Because of this rumour, some people bought a N95 mask for $30

1. I think that they have nothing to do, I mean seriously , people on Earth have nothing better to do than hurt other of their kind.

2. I quote directly from the article " Dr Yaacob cited five examples of such mischievous acts.
In one of them, someone circulated an altered screenshot of the National Enviroment Agency website of the fake Pollution Reading Index" See what I mean? It will affect Singapore as a nation because people will think twice about believing a artical/post on the internet.

1. I think people resort to spreading rumors because they think it is funny to watch people panic. They want to cause chaos.

2.The rumor is that someone circulated an altered screenshot of the National Environment Agency website with a fake ready of the PSI(Pollutant Standard Index). People with asthma in Singapore would belive it and think that they are going to die and start to panic. they will cause people to complain and make trouble for Government.

1)Some spread rumours to make money.Eg. Doctors sometimes spread rumours to make money:people with breathing problems will go and consult them, then they will charge them a lot of money.

2)One of them was about the haze. Many people will panic and buy lots and lots of mask . Some will also worry what will hapened to them if their asthma attack.People do this regardless whether it is true. These rumours will scare people and they will go "crazy" even though they don't know whether it is true.

(1)Others might believe these people are telling the truth and would make them feel angry. Then some people would have went to Indonasia and fought.
(2)It would have created war between Singapore and Indonasia.

(2) One of the rumours that Minister Yaacob Ibrahim cited was that a person inaccurately said that the rainfall over Singapore on June 25 was acid rain. This really made many worry and as a nation, this changed into a really big chaos.

1)Some people think that spreading rumours is fun and they want the people who read their statement to worry badly. Some people spread rumours to make fun of other people and make them embarassed.Usually, people who spread rumours want to cause confusion and chaos in the social media.
2)One of the rumours Minister Yaacob Ibrahim cited is that someone wrongly accused Tan Tock Seng Hospital of jacking up the price of N95 masks.Singapore citizens might have reconsidered buying N95 masks from Tan Tock Seng Hospital. It might cause Tan Tock Seng Hospital to treat fewer patients and cause their business to go downhill.

We must not repost stories that we are not sure to be true or untrue. We should not have a habit of posting our comments on everthing we see on the social media. If we are not sure of the information or source, we should speak to a trusted adult before we make decisions based on the information. They resort to spreading rumours as they might want to gain personal interest. If some one circulated a fake PSI during the haze, people in Singapore will panic.

Q1)I think people wanted to spread rumours to either create mischief or trying to achieve a selfish goal. For example, someone may want their shop to make money.Hence,he/she decided to commit that action.

Q2)Minister Yaacob Ibrahim cited this example:
Someone circulated an altered screenshot of the National Environment Agency website with a fake reading of the Pollutant Standard Index.
This rumour would cause most Singaporeans to buy N95 masks from pharmacies and caused N95 masks to be sold out. This may also cause the person who started the rumour to earn more money.

2)Acid rain in Singapore.Lesser and lesser foreigners will come to visit Singapore as we use acid rain to get rid of the haze when it is not even true.If this rumor is true we cannot live up to a clean and green Singapore!

(1) People resort to spreading rumours because they taught they were having fun.
(2) National Environment Agency (NEA) website said the Pollutant Standards Index was 321. Someone circulated an altered screenshot alleging that NEA had reported the PSI as 393.Because of the rumours I think some Singaporean has already spend their moneys on mask and whatsoever during the haze.
