Wet Markets vs Supermarkets by 4 Joy 2012

Photo taken by Amanda Lau 4 Joy: The uncle selling fish at Blk 89 MacPherson Market specially picked up a big fish from his storage for Amanda to take this awesome picture.
Should wet markets go or stay? Wet markets have been around before many of us were born. Just Tekka Market alone was built in 1915! The first concrete wet market was built in 1894 and it is Telok Ayer Market. However, this was not the first wet market. Surprise! Surprise! The truly first wet market in Singapore was ordered to be built by Sir Stamford Raffles himself in 1825 but torn down shortly as it was inadequate.

We, as kids, find the wet markets stinky and filthy. Some of us have even witnessed live fishes taking a leap from the tray on to the wet floor. One of us has even slipped and fallen on the slippery floor. Nonetheless, our parents still go to the wet markets week after week. Why?

We found out that wet markets sell fresher produce than supermarkets. Also, we get to buy live animals like fish and prawns from wet markets and get to see them killed and cleaned. That helps us ensure that the food is really fresh and safe to eat. Wet markets also have fresher and more unique fruits and vegetables like figs.

On top of that, if we are familiar with the stall vendors, we get freebies and discounts. At wet markets, the stall vendors will not count to the last decimal point the weight of our purchase. We often enjoy a bit more of what we want. Also, we get special advices from the vendors if the food is fresh for a certain way of cooking. You never get such treatments at supermarkets!

So do you think wet markets should stay or go?

I think supermarket could go since not alot of peoples went there to buy foods or sweets. The food from wet market is fresher than supermarket. I was shocked that wet markets built in 1894. If wet markets are gone,we cannot buy such fresh varieties of food. And we cannot get any more freebies. In fact,we should have more of them!:)

Wet markets should definitely stay! The ambience at a wet market is very unique; the sights, sounds and smells always fascinate me. Like Athena and Ngoc, i enjoy the going to wet markets because of the personal shopping experience it provides. The friendly people there are always ready to offer advice on how to cook certain vegetables or how to choose fresh fish.

PS: Your pictures are lovely, Amanda! Well done, 4Joy.

Wet markets should stay as one of the websites say that Singapore is known for it's wet markets! Wet markets should also be managed by vendors and rent the place instead of letting Sheng Shong run the whole wet market. The food that they have is also more fresher.

We should keep the wet markets as you see people makes a living there, their enviroment of working has been the same for decades. We also have air-conditions markets too so i dont think that it is a need for us to take them away .
By the way if we change them then we will waste money for the electricity and alsothe fish smell will stay in the place and it will not be as susseccful as the people that supported thought.

Wow! All these are very insightful comments. I have learnt so much from this discussion. I am also pleased that while some of you do not like certain aspects of wet markets like the smell, you still propose that they should stay as you understand the importance of preserving our history and our culture. :)

The difference between supermarket and a wet market is in the supermarket, we need to go the cashier but it is not like that in the wet market. But the wet market's floor is dirty and slippery but it isn't in the supermarket.

I think wet markets should stay.Nowadays many people are attracted to supermarket than wet market as Super markets are fancy ,attractive with AC and escalators which attracts kids and adults. Many rich people will prefer to buy in supermarket as it is neat and convenient to buy. However, from my opinion wet markets are still the best as we could get fresh vegetables, fruits and also live fresh fish, chicken and prawns. This ensures the quality of the product we buy. Moreover they are cheap and discounted. Hey.... always old is the best..........get one and forgo another.....get fresh product at the cost of the compromise on the environment where it is sold.

I think that the market should stay.It is because the elderly people used to be buying food and other from the wet market. If the government destory it,the elderly people cannot buy anything at the wet market and will not used to supermarket and those who selling things in the wet market will lost their jobs and no one will hire them and they will get more poor.

wet markets should be kept as a memory for singaporens.. and we can also bargin for lesser prices but in the supermarket they are fixed price .

I think it should be kept.It is an important part of the country's history. And people in the wet market will give some freeebie things when we buy vegietables, meats than other markets shop(coldstorage).

Loke Jia Hui(P6 Joy) said...

I agree and does not agree because

Agree is because the wet market sell those uncooked food or either fresh vegetable or fish is very cheap and it can help my/our parents to save at least a few cents even it is only a few cent but even 1 cent is also money and meaningful to us.And the workers at the wet market can also earn some money at there.
Disagree because there is some flies and it made the food dirty.Sometimes the wet market food verses supermarket food the food in the supermarket is freshes and has OFFER sometimes. But using the price to compare I prefer wet market price

En You(P6 Joy) said...

Although wet market are smelly and old but without it i will have no more very fresh fish and veggies to eat!Wet market has Kampong egg which is so much better than the normal egg and even cheaper, wet market must be kept and we also must think of the living of the aunties and uncle.
GO WET MARKET!!!!!!!!!

I think wet markets should stay as they are like the treasures of Singapore in the past and the younger generation children would get to feel, understand and learn how it feels to be in a wet market.
