A Place for all Creeds & Races - the former Bidadari Cemetery (6 Joy)

LRD Issue: 10 April 2012
Class: 6 Joy

The former Bidadari Cemetery is just a few bus-stops away from Canossa Convent Primary School (CCPS). If you have ever taken a bus from CCPS to NEX Shopping Mall, you would have passed by the defunct cemetery.

In 1998, the Government drew up a Master Plan for Singapore. In the Master Plan, it was stated that Bidadari Cemetery was to be cleared for the building of houses. The relatives of those who were buried there were informed that they had four years to claim the remains.

Today, the former cemetery is a park. There are also plans to build a New Town. There have been various debates over whether it is right to “destroy” a cemetery to make way for the building of houses. Besides that, there is also the question of whether anyone would want to stay in a flat/house that is built over a cemetery.

What are your thoughts on this? Post your answers to the following two questions as a comment to this blog entry:
  • What do you think of “destroying” a cemetery to make way for the building of houses?
  • Will you stay in a flat/house that is built over a cemetery?

1)I think that removing the bodies of loved ones from the grave and incinerating them is very disrespectful because if they wanted to be incinerated, they would have said so.
2)NO.

1) I think it is not a nice thing to"destory" a cemetery to make way for the building houses. It will not let the dead rest in peace and supertitious people would not buy it.

2)I would not stay in a flat or house built over a cemetery ,the spirts of the dead would be there and we are disturbing them as that is their resting place.

Q1.I think it does not show respect to the "spirits" who had made their homes at the cemetry.

Q2.No, I will not stay in a flat/house that is built over the house. You may disturb the spirits there that once was in peace and they may drive you out of the house as you may make too noice , disturbing them .

I think that “destroying” a cemetery to make way for the building of houses is acceptable because if it is just not to disrespect them and not let them rest in peace,a lot of people will not have a home to stay in.

I would not like to live in a house built over a former cemetery as I have a lot of respect for the dead. the dead might be dead but that does not mean that they do not have feelings. If someone with a lot of power were to throw you out of your own house, how would you feel? What if they were to give you another low quality house? What if they were to burn you? Also people were to live there they would be in the constant fear that ghosts may hunt them. Why can't we just leave that piece of land alone? That will reflect better in our human values.our future generation would then have more first-hand experience other than from textbooks. Our pioneers deserve more respect than this.I think that we should just leave it alone. That is why I would not like to live in a house built over a former cemetery.

I will definitely not live in a flat/house built over a cemetery as I feel that I'm also disrespecting the deceased and I wouldn't feel quite safe.

I would not stay in a house built over a cemetery as the spirits of the dead may remain although their graves are brought to somewhere else and the spirits might haunt us.

Q2 Answer: No. I don't think it is a good idea to build over a cemetery because I believe some people will think it will be 'haunted and spirits of the dead' will be there staying with them.

I think it is a very bad idea. We should respect the dead and their relatives. Example: I wouldn't want my grandfather grave to bo move, as it will be very inconvinient. Sonmetimes we choose the cemetry for convinience.

I dont think its a good idea as it is not letting the people being buried to rest in peace, i am pretty sure that if 'we' were buried we will not want to be digged up and to make way for bulidings that people will leave in. Its like if we paid a packaged tour and then they cancled the tour and did not give us a refund.

I will not live in a house/flat like this as i am super super scared/afraid of dead. To me death is so scary i dont even dare to attend a funeral or go near one. But most singaporeans will not stay in such a place i guess. It is clearly disrespectful.
